courtMICHIGAN — A federal judge ruled Friday that a Michigan state law that would have barred many public entities from providing health insurance to same-sex partners of their employees is unconstitutional.

According to a press release from the ACLU, who spearheaded the lawsuit, five gay and lesbian public employees challenged the law because they were going to lose their health insurance or already had.

“This law served no purpose to the state of Michigan other than to needlessly discriminate against hard-working families,” said Kary L. Moss, executive director of the ACLU of Michigan.

As of this time Gov. Snyder’s office has not released a statement.
