CASNOVIA, Mich. — The structure of the Snappy Apple Farm Market and the lack of fire hydrants hampered efforts by fire crews to put out a fire Thursday night.

“All the water had to be trucked in by tanker truck,” said Muskegon Township Fire Chief Dave Glotzbach. What’s more, the main storage facility, which has been added to several times and is usually full of apples, was empty except for pallets and plastic and large open spaces, which made the fire hard to fight.

It took nearly two dozen fire units to get things under control.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Thursday at the market located at the junction of M-37 and M-46 in eastern Muskegon County.

Visitors to the Snappy Apple Facebook page expressed support for the company and its workers. The business has served the area for around 60 years.

The business is not a total loss. While firefighters believe the fire started in the office and migrated through insulation to the cold storage area, a major portion of the complex was undamaged.

There was no word on injuries.
