GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — You will get an extended break from the Michigan Department of Transportation this 4th of July weekend.

Construction crews will stop work on highway projects in the state at 3 p.m. Wednesday and won’t return until 6 a.m. Monday. That will eliminate pop-up and intermittent lane closures that many projects require.

For example, all lanes will remain open all weekend on eastbound and westbound I-196 at Market Avenue over the Grand River.

However, there are some lane closures and ramp closures that must remain in place:

  • Ramp closed from eastbound I-196 to northbound US-131. Exit at College Avenue and take westbound I-196 to northbound US-131.
  • Ramp closed from westbound I-96 to westbound 28th Street in Cascade. Take the first 28th Street exit, which usually is only for traffic headed to eastbound 28th Street. You can turn onto westbound 28th Street with the traffic signal.
  • Left lane closed on US-131 from I-196 to Ann Street with a traffic shift.
  • One lane open eastbound and westbound with a traffic shift on I-96 at Nunica.
  • Ramp closed from westbound I-96 to M-104 Grand Haven and Spring Lake. Exit early at 112th Avenue.

Expect reasonably busy traffic on the expressways heading away from Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo as people head for the places they will spend the weekend. The heaviest traffic is expected when people head home Sunday afternoon and evening.
