GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — FOX 17 had the E. coli levels checked for several bodies of water in West Michigan.

That includes Grand Rapids pools. The pools are safe. Prein and Newhof Laboratory conducted the tests. A scientist with the lab said 300 is a high number for E. coli levels in water. The human body should not come in contact with E. coli levels above 300.

Briggs and Richmond Parks’ pools tested at <1 or ‘less than one.’ The fish ladder in downtown Grand Rapids was also ‘less than one.’

A staffer at Richmond Park said the pools are monitored for cleanliness every day, starting at 6 a.m. Chlorine keeps it clean. The scientist said moving water (in the Grand River) helps keep the fish ladder clean. Stagnant water is more susceptible to bacteria collection.

E. coli enters water via the excrement of warm blooded mammals (i.e. the feces of geese, deer, etc).
