NEW YORK — The American League defeated the National League 3-0 in the 2013 All-Star Game, snapping a three-game losing streak in the Midsummer Classic. The Detroit Tigers had the most members on the American League squad and they played a big role in the victory.

Detroit players accounted for three of the AL’s nine hits in the ballgame and Miguel Cabrera scored the game-winning run. Cabrera led off the fourth inning with a double to right-center and later scored on a Jose Bautista sacrifice-fly. Jhonny Peralta added a single in the eighth while Prince Fielder had a triple in the ninth inning when Carlos Gomez misplayed the ball in right field.

Max Scherzer started the game for the American League and ended the perfect inning by striking out Cincinnati’s Joey Votto.

New York Yankee closer Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect eighth inning for the American League in his final All-Star Game and was named the game’s MVP. Rivera has announced that this season will be his last.

With the win, the American League has clinched home-field advantage in the 2013 World Series.
