KENTWOOD, Mich. — A sergeant with the Kentwood Police Department said a young man in his late teens or early twenties entered a home on Stauffer Avenue and shot another young man in the chest three times.

It happened on Stauffer’s 4800 block, Saturday around 4:30 p.m.

“I heard somebody downstairs yelling, ‘Help me, help me!’” Zachary Springfield, a resident at the home said.

After looking out the living room window, Springfield said he saw someone “laying in the street.”

A neighbor started to drive the victim to the hospital. First responders caught up with the victim near 54th and Division Avenue and drove him the rest of the way. Police recovered a gun at the home as evidence.

“I just hope to God that whoever was hurt is going to be okay,” Crystal Johnson, the next door neighbor said.

Springfield said the suspect was “trying to rob the house.”

Police said one of the roommates pulled the suspect out of the home and beat him up. The gunman was found in the street with severe injuries to his head. He was also taken to the hospital.

Neighbors on Stauffer Avenue are reminded of the senseless shooting that happened just this past week, not far away. Five people were shot at a graduation party after some uninvited guests showed up. Police say an 18 year old has been arrested for the crime.

The victim’s and suspect’s identities in the Stauffer shooting have not been released.
