arkansas inmateGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A wanted fugitive from Arkansas has been arrested in West Michigan.

According to FOX 13 in Memphis, Stanley James Cooper skipped town while on trial for multiple charges of rape.  The last time he had been seen, was on Tuesday at court.  When trial resumed on Wednesday, Cooper never showed up.  The case was handed over to a jury, which found him guilty on three counts.

Police in Arkansas continued to search locally for the convicted rapist, but neighbors hadn’t seen him since Tuesday afternoon.  A reward of $2,000 dollars was authorized for any information that led to his arrest.  At some point, authorities learned that Cooper had connections in West Michigan, and reached out to the Grand Rapids Police Department.  The West Memphis Police Department informed them that Cooper may be in the city.

Early Friday morning, Cooper turned himself in to police here in Grand Rapids.  It is unknown what led him to take this action.  He is now lodged in the Kent County Jail, awaiting extradition back to Arkansas.
