WYOMING, Mich.-  Mark Armstrong, a 26-year-veteran of the Wyoming Police Department who was arrested July 26, was fired from his job for using racist terms, according to an internal letter from Jan. 31, 2011.

Wyoming Police Chief James Carmody told the then-officer that his employment was in jeopardy because of comments he made in the police department’s report writing room that January.

The letter says Armstrong used a derogatory term toward African Americans and then as he walked out the door said.

“You can’t call them the N-word,” the letter reads.

In that letter, Armstrong was given a chance to respond to the allegations but declined to do so and was fired on February 3rd, 2011.

Armstrong was arrested Thursday, July 26 for allegedly pointing guns at Holland Public Safety officers after leading them on a 15-minute chase.  That incident led to Eighth and Ninth streets near College Avenue in Holland being shut down for 45 minutes.
