GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After several weekends of daytime lane and ramp closures, you may get some relief this weekend.
Most scheduled projects this weekend will only take place at night, with one notable exception.
That exception is the planned total closure of US-31 Sunday morning for five minutes at a time. The closures will be required due to utility work on US-31 northbound and southbound between Marquette Avenue and the interchange with Business US-31 Moses Jones Parkway, also known as the “spiderweb.” Those brief closures are scheduled for Sunday between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Two ramp closures are scheduled at night to minimize the number of drivers affected:
Ramp closed
- Plainfield Avenue to eastbound I-96
- Friday 7 p.m. to Saturday 10 a.m. (8/16-8/17)
- MDOT detour: Enter westbound I-96, exit at southbound US-131, but use the loop ramp to get right back on eastbound I-96.
Ramp closed
- I-96 westbound to Plainfield Avenue
- Saturday 7 p.m. to Sunday 10 a.m. (8/17-8/18)
- MDOT detour: Continue on I-96 westbound, exit at southbound US-131, use the loop ramp to get onto eastbound I-96, exit at Plainfield Avenue.

MDOT detour: From Plainfield Avenue, enter eastbound I-96, exit at Leonard Street, enter I-96 westbound.
