GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — One of the biggest football stars in recent Grand Rapids Christian history is fighting for his life after a shooting early Sunday morning on the city’s southeast side.

Andre Davis, 21, is in critical condition at Butterworth Hospital. Police say he was shot while riding in a car near South Division Ave. and Wealthy Street around 3:30 a.m.

People who have visited Davis at the hospital on Sunday tell FOX 17 that he was shot in the back of the head and is now brain-dead.

Davis , a 6’1″, 265-pound fullback from the class of 2011, was an all-state honoree his senior season for the Eagles.

He spent the past year playing for the College of the Canyons in Valencia, California. He scored five touchdowns in five games, including the winning score in his first game of the season.

Friends says Davis was planning to move to Ypsilanti on Monday to play football at Eastern Michigan.

Friends and family are using “#PrayForDre” on Twitter this evening to support Davis.

Hope he comes out okay. Wonder why people choose to ride thru the wild side of town at wee hours of the morning. Can't our young people find something better to do or at least find a safer route to their destination? Keeps happening over and over.

Imagine how brazen and aggressive criminals would become WITHOUT stand your ground laws.

Stand your ground laws eliminate the legal requirement to run away before defending yourself ….

This is so sad another young man with a great future! Now fighting for his life and future and for what 1 last night on the town before heading off to college .I wish young people would understand when they have a future like he had coming others will try and take it away as they cannot stand ro see others succeed. I do not know this Young man or the other 2 people that were shot Saturday night but do know something has to be done about all these shooting. Are we living in the war zone or what but there are way to many guns in the streets!!!
