Upton meetingKALAMAZOO, Mich. — Rep. Fred Upton expressed his support Wednesday night for what is being called the “total removal option” in the cleanup of the Allied Paper Mill property.

The plan calls for the removal of 1.5 million cubic yards of PCB contaminated material. Upton said it was a nonpartisan issue and that Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow signed a joing letter to the EPA saying they support it as well.

toasted Larry Bell for standing up to the EPA on the Enbridge oil spill Wednesday night.

“We’re not going away until they take it all away,” he said during the Allied Paper Mill meeting Wednesday night to a crowd of about 150.

EPA officials announced a plan to cap the site and monitor it in March, which would cost $36 million.  A total cleanup of the site would cost $336 million, but a private firm, Environmental Quality, has estimated they could do it for $120 million.  EPA officials have not said when they would reach a final decision.

Upton also praised Larry Bell of Bell’s Brewery for standing up to the EPA on the Enbridge oil spill.
