OHIO (CNN) — Convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro reportedly killed himself in prison late Tuesday.
According to CNN affiliate WOIO, castro was pronounced dead at the Orient prison after he was found hanging in his cell. Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years for kidnapping and sexually assaulting three young women for more than a decade.
Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus all survived the ordeal.
Castro was in protective custody and was monitored every 30 minutes. Ohio State Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating. Castro was 52 years old.
