Kent County Sheriff patrol car logoGRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A motorcycle rider who led police on a chase that at times exceeded 100 miles per hour is in critical condition after crashing.

The rider was identified as Salkan Karic of Kentwood.

Karic is alleged to have first taken off when a Michigan State Police trooper tried to pull him over on the East Beltline at Leonard Street, according an account from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. The motorcyclist managed to get away when the trooper lost sight of him near Knapp Street at Grand River Avenue. It was in that initial chase that the cycle’s speed is believed to have exceeded 100 miles per hour.

A deputy with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department spotted the motorcycle traveling southbound on Forest Hill Avenue. After turning around, the deputy got behind the motorcycle, but the rider took off again, speeding past vehicles on the right.

After the deputy briefly lost sight of the rider, he found the motorcycle crashed on a tight turn on Forest Hill Avenue at Engleside Drive SE.

The rider suffered head, pelvic, and foot injuries.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
