GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 25-year-old Holland man died in a construction accident Thursday afternoon on U.S. 31.

At 3:21 p.m. Thursday, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a construction accident with injuries in the southbound lanes of U.S. 31 at Warner Street in Grand Haven Township. Upon arriving at the scene, emergency workers found Robert Greving, 25, of Holland suffering from serious injuries.

He was transported to North Ottawa Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Greving was an employee of Dan Hoe Excavating in Holland and was one of several employees working in a construction zone in the southbound lanes of U.S. 31 at Warner Street. One southbound lane is closed due to the construction of Michigan turns in the area.

Greving was working off the roadway. A co-worker operating a compact track loader tractor had placed the tractor in reverse after leveling some packed gravel for the shoulder and backed up the tractor. It’s unknown how Greving ended up behind the tractor, but he was hit by the tractor and suffered serious injuries.

After being transported to the hospital, Greving was pronounced dead from injuries getting hit by the tractor.

The incident is under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and OSHA.
