MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich.,– A new afterschool program is in the works for students in Muskegon Heights. The Muskegon Heights Alumni Association is working to organize the program, called ‘Vertical Youth’, a name that holds a meaning of their mission.

Joseph Warren, president of the Muskegon Heights Alumni Association says they wanted to do something to give back to their community.

The goal of the program is to create a place where students can go to do their homework from 3:30-5:30; it would be available to students from grades K-12. “Some kids just don’t have anywhere to go to do their homework and we want to provide that for them, another outlet from the school that they can have as a Safe Haven.”

Warren says not only is it a way to keep kids out of trouble but a way to keep them focused on their education. “We want to show not only Muskegon Heights but we want to show the state and the country we are trying to move forward and succeed for the greater good of the students in Muskegon Heights.”

Warren says they are talking with leaders from the Hope Lighthouse Church to hold the program there.

They have also reached out to colleges like Baker and Grand Valley State University to have their education major’s help as tutors. Warren says they hope to kick the program off on October 1st.
