LANSING, Mich.– While the official numbers won’t be released till December, schools across the state already have an idea of how much the student population has fluctuated following Wednesday’s Student Count.

Beginning with Grand Rapids Public Schools, the district reports being down 700 students from this time last year. That’s right on target with what the district expected and could even turn out better once the official numbers come out.

Right now, GRPS student population is 16,836, down from 17,536.

This is the first year the district implemented it’s new restructuring plan to cover a nearly $8 million dollar budget deficit.

At the Lakeshore, Muskegon Public Schools superintendent Jon Felske says it’s down 160 students from last October. That’s better than expected since the district planned to loose 200 kids. This year’s student count stands at 4,373.

Holland Public Schools reported losing nearly 120 students from last year. That’s a little more than expected. As of October 2, the district has 3,953 students.

In Grand Haven, the district added nearly 100 students, sending it’s student population to 6,224.

District’s already have an idea of how much it’s population will fluctuate. October’s count is just one of two during the school year, but accounts for 90% of a district’s funding.
