A couple of hours after the break was discovered, some of the pavement had given way, though repair crews were on the scene. Those crews said they thought a 16-inch water main had failed, but they weren’t sure which one, since several mains run in the area.
Lake Drive east the major east-west thoroughfare in East Grand Rapids, and the break occurred right in front of East Grand Rapids Middle School. Water service to the school was unaffected.
Police supervised arrivals of parents dropping off their kids.
It was estimated repairs would take the better part of the day.
