HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Both north and southbound US-31 were closed  Thursday after a fatal crash involving a semi and a car.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at roughly 9:30 p.m. at US-31 and James Street.  Police say a car driven by Jeffrey Lee Howell, 57, was stopped at the red light.   Howell then suddenly proceeded into the intersection while the light was still red.  An approaching semi, which still had a green light, broad-sided the vehicle, killing Howell.

The driver of the semi was not hurt.

Northbound 31 was closed at Lakewood, and southbound was closed at James Street while the investigation took shape.  As of midnight, everything was back open.
