Beating Victim Speaks Out: “I Feel So Blessed To Be Alive”

PAW PAW, Mich.– One West Michigan mother is speaking out exclusively to FOX 17 after she says her estranged boyfriend nearly beat her to death Thursday morning.

Van Buren County deputies are calling it an “immediate and vicious” attack, so bad that Mary Teske now needs reconstructive surgery for the injuries on her face.

By sharing her story she hopes to get the word out so this doesn’t happen to anyone else. Deputies say the father of Teske’s children, Kane Reeves, brutally beat her when she returned to grab some things from her house.

At one point she says she was able to run into the street where a witness driving by called 911, saying he saw a woman getting dragged into a house whose face was “covered in blood.”

“I was just looking for anyone to help me, anyone to rescue me, to stop him from doing what he was doing,” Teske said.

She says she just feels blessed to be alive and she appreciates the little things in life so much more now. She says she saw the warning signs and ignored them like so many abuse victims do.

“I never thought anything like this would happen to me. Get out as soon as you see the warning signs; don’t keep tolerating it,” she said. “Don’t make excuses. That’s what I always did.”

Mary will have to have several surgeries anda care page has been set up to assist with donations.

Reeves is charged with attempted murder and assault with intent to murder. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
