woodsROCKFORD, Mich. — Pam Ritsema spent her Saturday learning how to save lives. Ritsema is volunteering her time to become certified to help in searches across West Michigan with Kent County Search and Rescue.

“I was trying to find a volunteer activity that fit with what I like to do, which is walk and walk in the woods,” said Ritsema.

Kent County’s Search and Rescue Deputy Director of Search Management Richard Hodgson said that it’s important for volunteers to understand navigation techniques in order to properly conduct investigations.

“It allows them to radio their position in to get assistance, or if they have a find or a piece of evidence, they can call law enforcement to come get that evidence,” said Hodgson.

Ritsema said that she hopes all of her hard work pays off so she can help save a life.

“I want to be qualified, so I can get out there and help,” said Ritsema.
