MUSKEGON, MI- The Sappi Paper Mill on Lakeside Drive in Muskegon has been demolished. The paper mill has been standing since 1900.
25 homes within 500 feet of the blast site were asked to evacuate or stay in their homes for a few hours on Sunday morning. The blast happened around 11 a.m. Sunday morning. Only the two smoke stacks remain standing.
According to Ken Callow, the project engineer for Melching Demolition, explosives will be placed at the base of the power house building on the side closest to the lake.
Prior the to explosion only 25% of the structure was left. Demolition started in 2011.
The paper mill has been closed since 2009.
