Emergency vehicles crowd I-96 eastbound lanes over the Thornapple River at M-6.

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — One man died when his car left I-96 and landed in the Thornapple River below.

Emergency crews were sent to the junction of I-96 and M-6 after a car was reported in the Thornapple River.

Preliminary investigation showed that a 2011 Mercury Marquis, driven by a 75-year-old Ionia man, was westbound on I-96 at M-6 when the vehicle left the roadway, entered the grass median, struck the bridge barrier and entered the Thornapple River.

Witness statements taken on scene indicated that the driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was travelling at a high rate of speed in the median between westbound and eastbound I-96 and never braked prior to entering the river.  The Mercury Marquis was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
