BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A 14-year-old is listed in stable condition Monday after being shot by a Battle Creek police officer Saturday.

According to a press release, police received a 911 call came that Nick King was walking near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Upton Street carrying a pistol.

King’s gun was fake and he was coming out of the Drive Thru Party Store when police located him.

The release says that officers ordered him to surrender and raise his hands, and that the officer fired a shot when they saw “a large caliber pistol.”  King then dropped the gun and fled on foot, and was found a short distance away with a gunshot wound.

Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting and the officer, a 21-year veteran, is on paid leave.
