BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Spartan Stores officially announced Tuesday its merger with Minneapolis-based Nash Finch Company.

The company released this statement: http://fox17online.com/2013/11/19/spartan-stores-and-nash-finch-complete-merger/

With the merger comes a name change. The national food distributor is now called SpartanNash. The acquisition is said to be worth more than a billion dollars.

The change to SpartanNash is expected next spring, but the stock hit the Nasdaq today.  Shareholders approved the merger at a separate meeting yesterday.

SpartanNash’s board includes several former directors at Spartan, but there was no word on possible layoffs or what the merger means for people who work at the Byron Township headquarters.

The company’s West Michigan assets include D&W, Family Fare, Glen’s Market and Forrest Hills Foods.
