PORTLAND, Mich.- At 99 years old, Dorothy Goodman still lives on her own and doesn’t even use a walker to get around her house on the family farm. Recently, she’s become the talk of the town after winning a local contest sponsored by a church.

The First Congregational Church in Portland sponsored the 50-50 contest after learning that the bell which had been in its Church’s steeple since 1906 was structurally unsafe. The Church decided to be safe and took the bell and steeple down. For $5 a guess, all members of the community could enter the contest to guess the bell’s weight.

Goodman had the lucky guess at 1,314 pounds which was picked by using numbers significant to her age.

As the winner, Goodman will be the first one to ring the bell in its new steeple when it’s completed, hopefully by summer of 2014. If you would like to help restore the steeple, you can mail a check to the First Congregational Church office at 421 E. Bridge St., Portland MI 48875; make sure that you write “Steeple Fund” in the memo line.
