KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A 27-year-old Kalamazoo man is in Kalamazoo County Jail facing charges that he extensively damaged the turf at Kalamazoo Christian High School while he was driving drunk.

Things started when Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were called to the Wayside Bar on Stadium Drive, answering reports that a man in a black Jeep Grand Cherokee was trying to run people down in the parking lot. When police got there, the Jeep took off.

Several minutes later, the same vehicle was reported stuck in the pond at Kalamazoo Christian High School. The man tried to run away but was quickly caught.

When officers looked around, they found extensive damage to the school’s turf from the Jeep being driving on the grass. The man is now charged with driving drunk, reckless driving, and damaging property.

The school’s soccer field and baseball diamonds were not affected.
