NILES TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A suspect in a Berrien County sexual assault is in custody, according to police.
Deputies say the as-yet unidentified 25-year-old Buchanan man sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl in Niles Township Monday.
After releasing surveillance photos of the suspect and his car at approximately 3:12 p.m. Tuesday, they confirmed someone was in custody just a few hours later.
He is currently lodged at the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
The victim was walking east on River Road near the intersection of Red Bud at approximately 4:05 p.m. Monday and was taken by a man in a four-door, dark-colored vehicle.
He then allegedly took her to two different locations in Niles Township and sexually assaulted her. She was then dropped off at a mobile home park in the Buchanan area.
The man’s identity will be released pending his arraignment Wednesday.
