Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell and city administrators received a $58,728 rebate check today from Consumers Energy representatives during a presentation at Grand Rapids City Hall.

“The wastewater treatment plant’s aeration system project, the first of its kind in North America, will save more than 735,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, resulting in a $62,000 annual savings,” Heartwell said.

“The city, as part of its focus on sustainability and saving energy, has projects completed or underway with Consumers Energy that will save more than 3 million kilowatt hours of electricity and qualify the city for more than $215,000 in incentive payments. These energy efficiency programs are saving energy and money for the residents of Grand Rapids.”

The company’s energy efficiency program is a key component of Michigan’s landmark energy reform law. Launched in 2009, the program is expected to save participating customers more than $200 million in electricity and natural gas costs this year alone.

“Helping Michigan save energy is our Promise and we’re pleased the city of Grand Rapids has been an active

participant in the energy efficiency program,” said Teri Van Sumeren, Consumers Energy’s manager of energy efficiency solutions. “With nearly 250 energy efficiency incentives and rebates available from Consumers Energy, improving efficiency in businesses like the city of Grand Rapids is easier than ever.
