Grand Rapids FireGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two people living in a Grand Rapids home are finding alternative housing after a suspected arson on the city’s southeast side late Thursday evening.

Officers with the Grand Rapids Police Department were first called to the 1100 block of Madison Avenue around 10:00 p.m. for a suspicious situation.  The home involved is just north of Hall Street.

On scene, a male suspect was taken into custody for unknown medical reasons and taken to the hospital for treatment.  Officers discovered the male had started a fire at the two apartment home in multiple locations before he was taken into custody.  Fire officials say the male wasn’t injured by the fire that occurred.

Both an upstairs and downstairs tenant were evacuated as firefighters responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.  Fire officials on scene reported internal damage throughout the home, though an exact estimate of the damage is still being determined at this time.

No injuries were reported at the scene.  Investigators are still working to determine what the suspect male was doing in the vicinity in the first place.

The incident remains under investigation by both the Grand Rapids Police and Grand Rapids Fire Departments.
