rosa_parksGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – There will be no public skating Friday night at Rosa Parks Circle, according to John Judnich, the recreation supervisor for the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department.

He said that the department staff made the decision this afternoon where they came to the conclusion that the ice is, “simply too thin.”

This decision will not impact Grand Rapids’ annual tree-lighting ceremony, however. Judnich said that the ice on the rink will be thick enough for the solo figure-skating performance following the ceremony that begins at 5:30 p.m. but not for public skating.

Crews are working throughout Friday into Saturday and the city expects to open the skating rink Saturday at 5 p.m. to the general public.
