WEST MICHIGAN — After a couple of days in the upper 30s and low/mid 40s, Michigan will need to brace itself for a reality check back to winter. Another blast of Arctic air will begin entering the state after the passage of an Arctic cold front around mid-day Sunday. The true Arctic blast will plunge in to the state and we’ll feel the full effects most of this week from Monday through Thursday/Friday.

Temperatures in the Northern Plains have already fallen below zero as the air continues to push south/east toward the Great Lakes. Our warmest temperatures on Sunday will occur at/shortly after midnight and will only recover to the low/mid 30s during the morning. Once the front slides through, temps will gradually fall off through the afternoon in to the 20s and breezy northwest winds will become prevalent.

We may see a few snow showers accompany the passage of the front and some lake-effect snow may kick in Sunday night in to Monday morning, but the best chance of more widespread accumulating snow will occur Monday night in to Tuesday morning where 2″ to 4″ could fall.

High temperatures with this Arctic blast will be hard pressed to reach 20 degrees, with overnight lows expected in the single digits. We won’t start climbing out of the deep freeze until later in the week (or weekend) when we head back in to the mid/upper 20s on Saturday. Two more inches of snow before 2014 will put Grand Rapids in the seventh position for the snowiest December, 3.4″ of snow will put GR in the number six position, and four inches will put us in the number five position. We will not make the number four position since it was 51.3″ set in 1951 and we’re only at 31.5″ now.
