Kentwood Church CrossKENTWOOD, Mich.- In July 2012, St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church burned down after an accidental fire sparked from fireworks.

The fire devastated the church community.

Since then, the church parishioners have been raising money and working to rebuild.

When the fire sparked church member Robert Dodde told us “This is where our friends are, everything is right here and it`s gone. The house is gone.”

Once the smoke cleared there was a message of hope.  Through all the rubble and charred remains, one thing had been saved.

Father Godfrey Onyekwere said it was the blessing of the day that the church cross had been saved.

Now, as the parish celebrates mass at their temporary location, anticipation builds for Tuesday’s installation of that cross atop the newly rebuild steeple.

“It`s kind of a reminder we are connected as Christians,” Father Godfrey Onyekwere said. “The more we realize were not alone, the easier it comes to be able to deal with difficult situations.”

The cross will be installed at the new St. Mary Magdalen church on Tuesday, December 31, starting at 9:30 am.  The parish is located at 1213 52nd St. SE in Kentwood.
