WEST MICHIGAN — The attached snapshot is from our FOX 17 computer forecast model we call FutureTrack HD. The image is valid for midnight tonight. You can see that steady snow will likely be falling across most of southern lower Michigan as an area of low pressure passes to our south over southern Indiana and Ohio.

Snow showers continue on this first day of 2014 with the possibility of another 2″-4″, perhaps 3″-5″ along/south of the I-94 corridor in to Thursday morning before the system pulls away. Amounts will decrease dramatically the further north you travel. Ottawa, Kent, and Ionia Counties will likely only see an inch or so by Thursday morning, with only a dusting at best further north of GR. The snapshot below shows our computer forecast model tallies from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning of additional snowfall.

The National Weather Service has only hoisted Winter Weather Advisories for the counties that border Indiana. Since this is a longer duration event, the impacts will be somewhat minimal even though roads will be snow-covered, slippery, and perhaps icy, since salt is not as effective below about 18 degrees. Total snow accumulations from this system along/south of I-94 will end up in the 5″ to 8″ range since about 4″ has already fallen from Tuesday evening/Tuesday night.

Thursday and Friday appear to be mainly dry days, but another cold front with briefly warmer temperatures in the mid/upper 20s with likely bring another round of some accumulating snow Saturday afternoon/evening. If this Arctic outbreak wasn’t cold enough, an even colder air mass comes in next week Monday with highs struggling out of the single digits for highs.
