GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich — An early morning fire destroyed part of a family owned residential garbage collection business. Firefighters arrived at Zamora’s Disposal, located on Lilly Street SE, to find heavy smoke pouring out of the building

According to fire officials, the fire appeared to begin in the back corner of the garage. A garbage truck which had been parked inside also caught fire.

Although the building is heavily damaged, owner Tami Zamora tells FOX 17 that several items were able to be salvaged from inside the office area. The family’s guard dog and bearded dragon were also able to be rescued.

Investigators are still working to determine a cause. It’s not clear if the fire was sparked inside the building or in the garbage truck involved.

Zamora says despite the setback, business will continue.

“We’re going to have to scramble to get everything organized and get everything going again, but Zamora’s lives on,” she said. “We started from the ground up and it looks like today we start that battle all over again. We did it once and we can do it again.”

No injuries were reported at the scene.
