VanderSlice-Chris—and-familyGRANDVILLE, Mich.– A community is coming together in support of a Grandville High School principal as he fights leukemia.

Chris VanderSlice was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) January 10, 2014.  He’s now undergoing intensive treatment at the University of Michigan. While VanderSlice and his family split time between West Michigan and Ann Arbor, his friends and church community are doing what they can to help.

“Your first reaction is to want to reach out and be part of this journey in some way,” said Tony Meyer, Senior Pastor at Ivanrest Church.

The VanderSlice’s belong to Ivanrest Church in Grandville. Chris is even a Deacon there.

The church set up a care page of ways people can lend their support. Ideas range from gas gift cards, meals and book ideas.

“Chris is a marathon runner and he’s addressing this as a marathon runner,” said Meyer. “And [Wednesday] the race started with his first chemo treatment so those who want to encourage him, he’s wide open for that.”

As Chris undergoes treatment, he is taking some time off as principal of Grandville High School.
