WEST MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — The first half of January was plenty cold with generous snowfalls and subzero temperatures. All indications are another cold blast is on the way, and this one could last a lot longer.

After temperatures rise to near 30 degrees by Sunday, an Arctic cold front pushes through early Monday, delivering perhaps some lake-effect snow and certainly some very cold temperatures. The image above is from the College of DuPage and shows temperatures early Tuesday. Inland locations will be below zero, while areas closer to Lake Michigan will be in the single digits to near 10 degrees. In addition, brisk winds will result in subzero wind chills for much of next week.

An even stronger push of cold air may arrive the following week. This image shows expected temperatures in ten days. While confidence in next week’s cold air blast is high, a forecast ten days out has a lot of “bust” potential. However, it bears watching, and of course we will do that on FOX 17.

While there is the threat of lake-effect snow with these cold blasts, it’s hard to get specific this early. Further, if it stays this cold for this long, more of the lake will freeze, and this could limit the lake-effect snow setup.
