Batchelder-ElizabethGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids woman is out of a coma after a severe assault in November.

Elizabeth Batchelder, 18, was in a coma since allegedly being attacked by her boyfriend Adam Phillips, 22, on the evening of Nov. 5

According to Batchelder’s grandmother, Jo Ann Smith, jury selection for Phillips’ trial is set to take place this week. Phillips is charged with attempted murder.

Batchelder’s family tells FOX 17 that Elizabeth came out of a coma just before Christmas. The family said that Batchelder is learning how to walk again and speak.

The family said that Batchelder does not remember anything within weeks of the attack.

Batchelder was pregnant at the time she was assaulted and the baby boy is said to be okay, and is expected to be delivered in mid-April.

Both Batchelder and Phillips have a 1-year-old daughter named Kyrie. Phillips is also the father of her unborn child.

I would like to know when his trial is this week. We should all go to support Elizabeth. I've heard that Adams family all show up to support him but hardly anyone was there for this young mother.

It's very important to show support to this mom and her children. There is too much ignorance about domestic violence and the courts/staff are also guilty of this. If a Mom stays in a relationship she is hated by everyone but if she leaves she has to send her children back for parenting time with an abusive parent all alone with no one to defend them….the system is broken and needs to be fixed and we should all be outraged by the violence and the courts lack of education and understanding of a very serious crime that is making us a very violent nation!
