US-131 Semi_winterKENT COUNTY, Mich. – Southbound U.S. 131 in southern Kent County is shut down due to an accident.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said its is closing down the highway between 146th and 142nd Streets because of a jack-knifed semi truck.  It is not clear if there are any injuries.

Also, westbound I-96 at M-11 (28th Streeet) is now closed due to a previous crash.

In Allegan County, 58th Street between 136th and 139th near Fennville will be closed today from now until 5pm for snow removal.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department sent this to FOX 17 News Wednesday afternoon:

Deputies working US 131 between Wayland and the Kent County line are reporting high wind, drifting snow, and very poor visibility.  Numerous slide offs as well as a jack-knifed semi in the southbound lane of US131 south of 100th St.   This semi b;locking may require shutting down the freeway.  Motorists are requested to please turn on headlights and also to refrain from using private vehicles with tow straps to remove slide offs.  Emergency lighting is necessary for your safety.

Also, conditions on the west side of the County are not much better.  58th St. between 136th Ave. and 139th Ave. will be closed to allow the Road Commission an opportunity to remove snow.

The problem is not new snow but the existing snow being blown around which is creating drifts and whiteout conditions.
