IONIA, Mich. — According to a union representative with Michigan Department of Corrections, there was an attempted escape at the Ionia Correctional Facility six weeks before Michael Elliot’s successful escape.

According to the representative, the inmate made it past the first security fence but not the second.

Elliot, 40, escaped the corrections facility Sunday night before allegedly abducting a woman and making her drive him to Indiana.  The woman escaped at an Elkhart gas station and is safe.

Elliot remained at large as of Monday afternoon.
