GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A group of West Michigan advertisers gathered in Grand Rapids to judge the Super Bowl ads on Sunday.

More than 665 million people watched the Super Bowl last year. While many tune in for the big game, countless others enjoy watching those, witty, well-thought-out commercials.

For the 1oth year in a row, Gravity Six Alliance,  a group of advertisers, gathered to vote on their favorite commercials that will rank highest in the USA Today ad meter poll.

“One of the things we’re holding ourselves accountable to is how the rest of America judges it,” John Sawyer, a judge on the panel said.  “Which are the ones that touch people and which ones in the national polls will rise to the top?”

While many people may have gotten a good chuckle out of the Chevy commercial that showed a seductive bull licking it’s lips to ‘You Sexy Thing’, the judges gave it four thumbs down.

“I look for a mix between sentimentality and maybe not humor but actually selling the product,” Zac Boswell, another panel judge said.  “I think it’s rare that you get an ad that’s both sentimental and serves the product.”

Even if one of the multi-million dollar ads didn’t make the top ranks this year, the creators still got some pretty good business out of the deal, according to Sawyer.

“People spend $4 million for each commercial and that’s a lot of money,” Sawyer said. “But when you think about it, 165 million people [watch]. Four million dollars is a very good deal because it breaks down to about 2.4 cents per person.”
