SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich (February 4, 2014) – Two people are now in police custody following a dangerous high-speed chase in Calhoun County that ended with a crash involving an MDOT service vehicle.
Around 10:30 a.m., Michigan State Troopers attempted to stop a speeding 2014 Hyundai along I-94 near 26-Mile-Road in Sheriden Township. The driver refused to stop for officers, reaching speeds in excess of 125 miles an hour before exiting the freeway at 22 1/2 Mile Road heading towards the city of Marshall.
Additional State Troopers joined the pursuit after the suspect driver continued speeding and passing several vehicles through no-passing zones. At one point in the pursuit, the suspect vehicle nearly hit a State Police K-9 unit that investigators say he attempted to ram.
The driver eventually turned north on Old 27 and lost
control, striking an MDOT service vehicle in the driver’s side door.
The driver and passenger in the MDOT vehicle were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The suspect driver and a passenger in the Hyundai were taken into custody following the crash. Charges will be sought against the driver for fleeing and eluding police.
Investigators say the 24-year-old suspect from Kalamazoo was wanted on several outstanding warrants prior to this morning’s chase, including charges of fleeing and eluding, fraud and resisting and obstructing.
The name of the suspect hasn’t been released pending arraignment.
No other injuries were reported by investigators.
