ZEELAND, Mich. (Feb. 4, 2014) — Mike Dunlap lives at the corner of Spring Court and Summer Drive.

Just feet away from the street sign, a winter wonderland blocks the entrance of his driveway. It’s a reminder of the constant pounding Mother Nature has brought to Michigan this winter.

“I think we got Ottawa County’s largest snow ball,” he chuckled.

“This is kind of the product of the road crew that came by and plowed our street, and when I came home from the museum that I work for lunch, this is what I came home to,” he said.

The snow is about thigh high on one half of the entrance. It’s nearly six feet high on the other half. The second half clearly broke away from a pile of snow near the grass. He had no choice but to park across the street in front of his neighbor’s home. He said the Ottawa County Road Commission had been down his street one other time Tuesday morning.

Following the first plow, he said his driveway’s entrance had minimal snow, like all of the other driveways on his street. “When they come down Spring [Court] and Summer [Drive], the plow gets pretty full. So I get buried often but never quite like this.”

But the pile is too much work for Dunlap’s snow blower. He said he gave the road commission a call, and they said they’d come check it out.

“This is going to be something where I may have to hire somebody to actually dig myself out,” he said.

FOX 17 asked him if he thinks it’s his responsibility.

“Well, no,” he said. “I understand these people risk their lives to come through here, and I know it’s been an unusual winter. But I’d think they’d be willing to help me out at least.”

FOX 17 also spoke with the road commission. They said they would assess the situation.
