U.S. Coast Guard Ships Break Ice in Great Lakes

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb. 5, 2014)– The Unites States Coast Guard has been busy this winter breaking ice on the Great Lakes.

Lake Michigan is 55 percent covered with ice so far this winter. Ice breakers continues to work in the Upper Peninsula.

The coast guard released several pictures to FOX 17 showing their ice breaking ships at work on the St. Mary’s River.

The river connects Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Most of the pictures were taken in the West Neebish Channel’s “Rock Cut” area between Dec. 26, 2013 and Jan. 15th, 2014.
