three oaks house fireTHREE OAKS, Mich (February 6, 2014) – The cause of a deadly house fire in Three Oaks early Thursday morning remains under investigation tonight.

Fire officials say crews were first called to the home in the 200 block of North Elm around 5:30 a.m.  It took 2 to 3 hours to get the fire under control.

Investigators would later confirm four people died in the fire, including a couple, their granddaughter and her boyfriend.  Their names won’t be released until at least Friday.

Fire investigators say 3 cats and a dog also died in the fire.

Although the cause of the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious at this point in the investigation, a K-9 unit will be brought to the area Thursday evening to help determine a cause.

The preliminary investigation revealed there were no working smoke detectors in the home, and an elderly man who lived at the home was a heavy smoker.

An official cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Winter weather conditions were also a factor during the response.  Some water lines froze, along with fire hydrants.
