GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb. 13, 2014) — Governor Rick Snyder’s office isn’t concerned over the bill to extradite escaped Ionia County inmate Michael Elliot back to Michigan.

Elliot has been in a LaPorte, Indiana jail since February 3rd.

Deputy Press Secretary Dave Murray said that Governor Snyder sent his extradition request to Indiana’s governor yesterday. The request is expected to be reviewed by Indiana officials before Elliot is brought across state lines.

“There is a process that has to be followed. There is a legal system. Your dealing with courts in two different states and attorney generals and governors offices in two different states. It’s a process that takes a little bit of time. Sometimes people are impatient, but this is how the court process works,” said Murray.

Murray said that the governor is confident Elliot will return to Michigan, they are just not sure when the transfer will take place.

Murray also said that Michigan will not foot the bill for the time Elliot spends behind bars in Indiana, but will be responsible to pay for the transport back to Michigan. A price that is not expected to break the bank.

“Inmates are moved throughout Michigan for various reasons, around the state. LaPorte County is not very far. It’s just over the border into Indiana, so it would not be a significant expense at all for him to be picked up and brought back to Michigan,” said Murray.
