Northwest AcademyCHARLEVOIX, Mich. (Feb. 13, 2014) — Students at one northern Michigan school are boycotting class to protest the firing of a teacher.

Students say that Christina Eanes, a former teacher at Northwest Academy High School in Charlevoix, was fired after giving a student a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“We were arguing then she came up gave me a hug and kiss on the cheek and then walked away. Mr. Witherspoon asked me how I felt about it and I told him I wasn’t uncomfortable, that’s just how she is.  It’s how Mrs. Eanes is; she’s just a mother like that. It was a motherly gesture nothing more,” 17-year-old student Kody Neumann told 9&10 News.

Neumann told 9&10 he attended the school board meeting where Eanes was fired.

Today, the small school was virtually empty, as students came in the morning and then signed themselves out with parent’s permission and met up at a local restaurant.

Students have a petition right now trying to get the school board to reconsider the firing.  The petition currently has 65 signatures.
