GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb 18, 2014) — Earlier this month, when this winter was the 12th snowiest on record, I posted a story about how this winter would likely end up in the top three snowiest winters of all time. You can read that post HERE.

As you can see from the image above, our current total of 101.1 inches is just a little over four inches from making it into the top three. This winter is one for the record books, for sure.

Speaking of records, take a look at this:

On Tuesday morning, the snow depth in Grand Rapids was 24.0 inches. This sets a couple of records:

  • The deepest snow depth during the month of February. The old record was 23 inches set in 1936 and earlier this month.
  • It ties for the second deepest snow depth on record. The record is 27 inches, set on January 27, 1978. This morning’s depth tied with January 28, 1978. Both of these were after the Great Blizzard of 1978.

There has been snow on the ground for 72 days in a row. The record for consecutive days is 117, set in the winter of 1903-1904.  However, when the criteria is expanded to include snow depth of at least four inches, the record is 86 days in a row set in 1909-1910. The current tally in Grand Rapids with this criteria is 71 days in a row.

We will continue to melt this snow pack over the next couple of days. Heavy rain is possible Thursday. For the latest, join us on FOX 17 News or visit the weather page at http://www.fox17online.com/weather
