GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (February 18, 2014) — Welcome to a company that’s been a fixture in West Michigan since 1954. In fact, Ludwick’s Bakery is celebrating their 60th anniversary of making cookies and cakes as well as their signature split top and ball donuts.

Ludwick’s produces about 16,000 cookies and about 60,000 donuts daily and ships them across the state to places like Meijer and Spartan stores. Most of their cookies go to convenience stores, gas stations, and vending companies. The company goes through about 7,500 pounds of mix and another 2,500 pounds of sugar (for icing) each week.

Ludwick’s prides themselves in delivering a fresh product. After making the donuts fresh, they are immediately frozen, then shipped to companies for sale and distribution. Their signature donuts include an old-fashioned split top donut and sour cream ball donut. The sour cream ball donut (in the shape of a ball) can be found in the freezer section of grocery stores in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

Tom Ludwick is a second generation owner who says the original recipe hasn’t changed. “The secret of the ball donut is we’re still working with the original formula and we use real sour cream” Ludwick says. The company significantly expanded their retail business in the early 1980s when they upgraded from smaller hand fryers to larger automated fryers.

To help celebrate their anniversary Ludwick’s developed several new cookies and donuts made with greek yogurt in an attempt to make the treats healthier with added nutrition. The company has also been known to donate their products to charities, fundraisers, and outings. Schools are also encouraged to bring students in to the facility on field trips to tour the bakery and see their production line.
