GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb 18, 2014) — Tuesday was a rare event for us this winter in West Michigan. We had sunshine and mild temperatures, mainly in the 40s for highs. The map above shows high temperatures across West Michigan. The warm spot was 46 degrees, shared by Muskegon, South Haven, and Benton Harbor. Only Ionia and Big Rapids failed to reach 40 degrees.

The high of 43 in Grand Rapids was the warmest temperature in over a month. The last time it was that warm was on January 13, when the high was also 43.

It will remain mild the next couple of days, with 50 degrees possible Thursday. However, it will come at a wet cost. This image from our in-house computer model, Future Track, shows some areas could get over an inch of rain.

This could result in more roof collapses. The already-heavy snow on the roofs will get even heavier with the rain on the way. Further, street flooding could be an issue, since so many of the drains and sewers are covered by the incredible amount of snow.

The snow depth in Grand Rapids on Tuesday morning was 24 inches. This is the deepest snow ever in the month of February and tied for the second deepest ever. Only January 27, 1978 had more snow on the ground. There was 27 inches that day.
