GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Feb. 28, 2014 — A student was detained Friday morning after police say a student brought a gun into Union High School in Grand Rapids.

According to John Helmholdt, Executive Director of Communications at Grand Rapids Public Schools, “This morning at approximately 10:30am, a student was approached by security as part of an on-going investigation, escorted to a closed office, and searched. A gun was discovered. The Grand Rapids Police Department was contacted immediately and the school was placed in code red lock down as a precautionary measure until authorities arrived and the investigation was complete. All students are safe. There will be a communication sent home with parents.”

The revolver was not loaded, said Larry Johnson, director of security at GRPS.  The lockdown was lifted before noon.

Officials said Friday the incident culminated a week-long investigation between police and the school.
